Can Osteopathy Help My Colicky Baby?

Babies cry. While this is their only way to communicate with their parents, the crying should not last for very long. What is going on with a baby that cries for prolonged periods and parents can’t calm them down no matter what they try? Unfortunately this happens; it’s called colic. A colicky baby is in a lot of pain but they cannot tell their parents why. Let’s explore colic and how to help babies with osteopathy.

What is colic?

Colic is characterized as intense, prolonged periods of inconsolable crying. These periods of crying usually last up to three hours and happen three or more days a week. Colicky babies will curls their legs, clench their fists, and sometimes have a hard belly. Colic may start when a baby is around two or three old, and usually start fading around three months old. This may seem like short amount of time but for parents three months is a very long time to watch your baby suffer.

What are the causes?

While the exact cause of colic is unknown, doctors believe there are many potential reasons. Migraines, gastrointestinal issues, such as allergies or an intolerance to food, anxiety, stress, and over excitement are a few. There are no tests that a doctor can run to diagnose when a baby has colic or if they will ever have it. A doctor will examine a baby and ask questions, but if you have gone to the doctor about it, then you probably know that your baby is a colicky baby. There are no medication that will help a colicky baby. All hope is not lost though, just because there are no medications to help does not mean there are no options to treat it. One such option is osteopathy.

What is Osteopathy and Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment?

Osteopathy is a whole body, holistic approach to pain management that focuses on establishing and maintaining the natural relationships of the inner workings of the body to deal with pain and improve functions.

Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) promotes the body’s ability to function, develop, and heal itself by addressing problems found in its structural components. OMT helps the body heal by finding the source of the pain, thus preventing future pain.

How Does This Help My Colicky Baby?

There is no cure for colic, but osteopathy can help lessen the physical strains and pains a baby feels. OMT can help make the baby more comfortable while reducing their irritability and shorten the stretches of crying. If you are concerned that babies are too small for OMT, don’t worry. OMT doesn’t hurt, it only helps and it is never too early to treat a child with osteopathy.

Colic causes so much stress, pain, and discomfort to both babies and their parents. Osteopathy is a good alternative to help ease the pain that causes the hours long crying. If you’re ready to learn more schedule a free consultation today.
